HISTORY
This is a historic time for the rights of
animals. With more and more people recognizing
that animals are sensitive, intelligent
beings, our society is on the threshold
of a profound and extraordinary change.
The concept of rights, once reserved only
for humans, is now being broadened to include
both human and non-human animals.
As with the other great social movements
of our time, the law is at the forefront
of this great change. The traditional
legal notion of animals as property is being
challenged and overcome, and the value of
animals both inherently and with respect
to humans is becoming the legal norm.
This growing movement is reflected by
the increasing number of lawyers handling
animal law cases. As a result, state
bars are instituting animal law specialties,
and over 20 law schools, including Harvard,
Hastings and UCLA, offer courses involving
animal law.
Up until now, however, no law firm has
devoted its entire practice exclusively
to the litigation of animal law cases.
Animal Law Associates is that firm. Established
as a nonprofit, ALA handles only cases which
protect animals and further the recognition
of their legal rights.
WHAT IS ANIMAL
LAW?
Animal law refers to any situation in which
an animal is being harmed and the law can
provide legal protection.
