WHO WE ARE

STAFF
  David Blatte, Executive Director, is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania Law School ’90. Upon graduation Blatte spent four years with the Public Defender in Philadelphia, gaining invaluable courtroom and trial experience while providing legal representation to people who could not afford an attorney.

Blatte then spent four years as a math teacher at Berkeley High School. In addition to his teaching duties, Blatte coached the Berkeley High Mock Trial team, reaching the county finals for four straight years.

After teaching Blatte became Executive Director of Vegan Action, where he still serves on the board and acts as legal counsel. Among his accomplishments at Vegan Action was the creation of a vegan logo, quickly becoming the universally recognized symbol of vegan products.

Upon his return to law, Blatte established a private practice in the area of animal law. The practice included a variety of cases, all of which involved the legal protection of animals.
 
ALA BOARD
 

The President of the Board is David Blatte, esq.

The Vice-President is Derek St. Pierre, esq. A graduate of Hastings Law School ’98, St. Pierre is a solo practitioner, handling a variety of cases, practicing primarily in the areas of criminal law and animal law. A long-time animal rights advocate, St. Pierre is a dedicated activist for all social causes.

The Treasurer is Ori Brafman, MBA. Co-founder and past director of Vegan Action, Brafman has since earned his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business ’01. He is currently Executive Director of a nonprofit dedicated to achieving peace through the business community.

 
ALA ADVISORY BOARD
  Elliot Katz, DVM, is President of In Defense of Animals, one of the largest and most influential animal rights organizations in the world. IDA has collaborated with ALA in several projects, expanding its influence to become a vital force in animal law as well as animal rights.

Nicole Paquette, Esq.
, is General Counsel for the Animal Protection Institute, a nonprofit with a nationwide scope and impact. Paquette is a long-time animal activist, bringing her legal skills and experience to an organization which has been fighting animal abuse and exploitation since 1986.

Bruce Wagman, Esq., is a partner at the law firm Morgenstein & Jubelirer. Wagman is co-author of the seminal legal text Animal Law and teaches a course on animal law at Hastings Law School.

Joyce Tischler, Esq., is President of Animal Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit whose mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. Founded in 1979, ALDF is a leader in the field of animal law and an important contributor to the work of ALA.
